There's Trouble Brewing by Nicholas Blake
I
do not read a lot of crime and detective stories but There's Trouble
Brewing is a fun, light read made all that much more fun with it's
brewing references. The body of a dog, Truffles, is found in a copper
boiling pot after which amateur detective Nigel Strangeways takes the
case. Luckily enough, for Truffle's murder is only the first for the
small town. Originally published in 1937 the author's insights into
human character resonate with a modern audience surprisingly well.
The few strictly food scenes in the novel are equally well done (and
well placed). As it happens, a missing cake and a few crumbs are the
missing key to finding out whodunnit!
